The "N" word

I've deactivated the "N" word from my vocabulary years ago and don't condone its usage in my inner circle of friends. I don't think the word serves any purpose.

However, the teacher (in the video link below) deserves an Oscar for 1) going on camera for this story 2) his reenactment and 3) his visual props.

I nearly wet myself at my desk as everyone in the sports department held court around my computer while I replayed this clip 5 times.

He's an English teacher too? Lord have mercy...

It's never been a part of my vocabulary. I had often asked people not to call me that. Do I say it sometimes? Yes. When joking (acting out of character), using it as an example, and when repeating lyrics (I hate censorship).

I never understood how or why it became popular again. Back in college, I asked someone why he uses it. He claimed it's a term of endearment. Sounds like he heard that somewhere and basically regurgitated it.

What I really love is how it's OK for brothas and others who are down to use it, but a regular white person tries it, they get hard looks and threats. My thinking is if you use it liberally, you lose the right to get mad when someone calls you that, regardless of race. It could be a white supremist calling you a "N". If you and your peeps constantly call each other that, why you gettin' mad for? Isn't it a term of endearment?

Or did it revert to the original intent, which was we were two-thirds human? What gives you the right to decide when the meaning changes? Give me a break. --Randolph

hell. to. the naw. i can't. i just can't. he lost his mind. niggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah he says. to a black woman. i wonder if the piece would've been different if the interviewer was white. he was very frank and honest but i wonder if he would've been even more so, like, "we all say it in our homes. every white person has used the word nigga."

my mom thinks we need to stop saying "the n-word." she doesn't like the use of the word nigga/er but feels if you're going to reference it, don't say "the n-word." and the reason is this. if we continually try to sweep the negative parts of our history (american) under the rug, we will continually move further from what civil rights leaders tried to accomplish. do children growing up know the meaning of the word? have they seen eyes on the prize. there's too much focus on the word and not enough on the lessons.

Ok, haven't seen the video. I'm assuming the offender in question is an Uncle Charlie? Hope so.

I've had a couple teachers say "nigga" in class. But I go to an HBCU. And believe it or not, it was relevant. Hmmmm

The N-word is a hard habit to kick for a lot of people, but for this dude to have visual aids is kind of a sad commentary on where we are.
