CSI-like test for job employment?

O.K...a few of my journalism friends have told me that I missed the memo on what is standard operating procedure for employment drug tests.

I've worked at two newspapers prior to my current job and I've only been tested once and that was a urine sample at my current job. According to my friends, some jobs require a hair sample (in addition to the urine sample) because the evidence of drugs can stay in your hair for up to 3 months.

I'm not a forensic expert so I'm taking my friend's word on the hair thing...but I've never heard of a company that required a hair sample for drug testing purposes.

I've heard of it before, but I've never had to do it. I don't even remember doing a drug test for my current "real" job, but I did do one for my freelance job (since it is the city government) and it took like over a month to get the results back.

And I guess it's a silly little habit of mine, but I always forgot when they said not to flush and don't wash your hands. Just my nasty habit of flushing and immediately washing my hands I guess. The last one, they wanted me to sign something before washing my hands, and I was like "uhhhhhhhhh, idk who else touched this" and she said they do wipe it down afterwards, and she did. But still, just NAST!!

Haha, this is pretty common. As a former athlete, I had one test in my four years by the SEC and because they stand in the stall and watch you pee, they always bring a man and a woman because they pick names when they get there. Isn't that courteous. Needless to say, it wasn't fun, but I passed. And I really HATE these cheatin ass athletes.

I had to get the hair test when I got my current job. It did strike me as odd, but when the woman explained it to me, it made sense. I didn't sweat it because I knew I clearly had nothing to worry about. It's been at least a year since I smoked crack. ;-)

I have worked for the Department of Defense...and they did a random urine test for new hires.

I have had several of those, but never had anyone ask me for a hair sample for a job.

Not sure what I would think if they did, I would give up the sample, but would think it pretty odd.

Does that company have that big of a drug issue with its employees that they had to go the next level in testing?

Man it looks like the Bill Clinton, “I didn’t inhale” excuse isn’t gonna fly. Hair testing can really get you even if your friends are big time weed-heads. That mess can be detected up to 90-days after contact. Employers can now ask for hair test and really get you that way. Check out this detection chart on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_test

is this the question you emailed about? If so, yes, they do require a hair sample...fortunately I've never had to do it because they require a bigger sample than I'm willing to part with.

Yeah, I heard of the hair test back in college, which was about 5 years ago for me. I remember them saying it could even trace marijuana smoked like as far back as a month before the test.
Of course, I had no reason to be concerned either way :-).

I too have definitely heard of people taking hair samples to test for Mary Jane, but that seems a lil' extreme for a paper. My paper has mentioned that we "may be subject to" random testing, but I've never heard of it actually happening.

Though in hindsight I had to take a urine test TWICE before I was officially hired at my job! (The first sample spilled while in transit). So we can safely assume that employers take this thing very seriously.

YES! unfortunately, i have been a victim of the hair test. many, many, many moons ago i applied for SUMMER job in a retail store. there i sat afraid to move and more afraid to object as a middle-aged white man snipped a tuff of my freshly relaxed hair and put in a bag. the back of my hair hasn't been an even length since.

I've heard of not such a sh.. before. They can grab DNA and all types of stuff from urine and a hair. Man, somebody could hit 150 home runs in a season and they'd still have to get a Presidential Order for Major League Baseball to allow them to get that much.

when i worked at blockbuster video over a decade ago they required a hair sample instead of urine. i haven't had to have a drug test since then.

so i gotta be sober to sell videos, but it's perfectly fine for me to be high when i'm handling top secret government documents and operating a computer that needs security clearance.

yeah...makes sense to me.

Hey,

Certain jobs like the police definitely ask for a hair sample for drug testing. Traces of drug use can still show up in your hair samples, long after it has passed from your urine. Hope this helps.

LMAO!

And Talia... crack is wack, honey.

I have yet to be subject to a drug screening in this fabulous business of ours. *shrug* Do they not care in DC? I dunno.

I heard the hair thing. I never heard of anyone being tested, but I have heard that trace amounts of substances can be found in the hair.

Like many have already commented, I heard of the testing being done, but I have never done it.
