Birthday 2008 (Part 2)

One day wasn't enough.

So, I stretched it out over eight days.

The birthday celebration started on Friday, Aug. 8th at Fashion 40. I heard so many good things about this place as an afterwork spot on a Friday. I finally decided to check it out. I got there around 8 p.m. or so that night and there was a short wait in line. No cover and the place was already packed when I walked through the doors. It isn't a big place...my guess it holds 200-250 people comfortably but I think it was at capacity when I arrived. The drinks were moderately priced and the music was good. I would go back in a heartbeat.

After Fashion 40, I left around 9:30 p.m. or so and went to a b-day party at the Grace Hotel, which was a few blocks away. The Hotel had a nice cozy feel to it and there was a pool visible from the lobby. Some of the party goers were in the pool (I forgot my bathing suit) and other were in the lounge area having drinks and talking. It was a very chill atmosphere. I stayed till about 11 p.m. or then walked back to the Port Authority to catch my bus home.

The b-day celebration continued on Saturday, Aug. 9th at a game night at a friend's apartment in Brooklyn. Oh what a night. I got there around 7 p.m. or so and stayed till 4 a.m. or so. During that time span, I met some pretty interesting people. I met a woman that couldn't hold her liquor (spilling her cup all over the floor, throwing up in the bathroom, hands draped over the men at the party). Absolutely...not a good look. Oh there was the man that loved to tell stories (nasty x-rated ones, of course). He wouldn't stop with his stories even though everyone pretty much ignored him and continued playing UNO. I'm going to pray for that brother...that he doesn't end up on trial like R. Kelly. There was the woman that "lost" some money in my friend's place and when people asked what was wrong with her at the end of the night, she blew them off. I said to my boy "fawk her" and we bounced. It turns out she lost $50 in my friend's bathroom. This was puzzling since my friend wasn't charging admission and there was no gambling going on at game night. So, there was no reason for anyone to be fumbling with money at the party. Over the next few days, she got clowned for losing the money and took it in stride. lol.

After game night, I took three days off before the actual b-day, Wednesday, August 13th. I had planned to have a party with about 30 or so people at Oceans 8 at Brownstone, but it turned out to be myself and eight other people. We had several rounds of drinks and ate plenty of food. It was a good time.

I was coming down the home stretch of the birthday week when I went to a happy hour event at Libation on Thursday, August 14th. It was raining in New York City that night and I didn't have an umbrella so I walked into the spot a little late and I was soaking wet. After drying off, I caught up with several friends at the happy hour event. A few friends bought me drinks as belated birthday gifts and I have a new official drink (Patron with a slice of lemon). Wow. That drink was good. Who knew.

The finale was on Saturday, August 16th and I was back in the BK again, this time for a birthday bbq of a friend. I got there around 5 p.m. or so and stayed till close to 9 p.m. I gave a guy from the party a ride to downtown Brooklyn and then I met up with another friend at Habana Outpost. Apparently, this spot is very popular on weekends in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. The food and drinks were moderately priced and it was a great atmosphere. The only problem is this place closes at 12 a.m. every night except Tuesday, when they are closed. Nevertheless, I would still go back.

Overall, it was an exhausting week going back and forth between New Jersey and Manhattan and New Jersey and Brooklyn but well worth the fun. I didn't get many gifts, in fact, only one person, the woman that nicknamed me Sher-bear, got me gifts. She's got such a warm heart...and God always rewards those that show kindness.

That's all for now...the Big 3-0 party is next year in Boston. Get your plane tickets a.s.a.p.
