The Boston Red Sox made their second trade of the offseason on Wednesday.
Boston acquired second baseman Mark Loretta from the San Diego Padres for catcher Doug Mirabelli.
Mirabelli backed up Gold Glove-winner catcher Jason Varitek in Boston, getting just 136 at-bats in 50 games and batting .228. He is a career .241 hitter with 47 homers and 165 RBIs in 445 career games for Boston, Texas and San Francisco.
Loretta is a .301 hitter with 63 home runs and 466 RBIs in 11 major league seasons with the Brewers, Astros and Padres. He had his best season in 2004, when he batted .335 with 47 doubles, 16 homers, 76 RBI and 108 runs scored -- all career bests, and good enough to earn him a spot on the NL All-Star team.
But last season he hit .280 with three homers and 38 RBIs for San Diego in 2005, when he had surgery to repair a strained ligament in his left thumb.

Oh man, Tim Wakefield is PISSED about this trade. Doug Mirabelli, of course, was his personal catcher. This one is going to bite the Sox right in the butt. Varitek gets all quesy when he sees that knuckler coming at him, and when Douggie was injured this past season the two starts with Tek in there were just plain UGLY. I was there for one of them.
I never thought about that...they might move wakefield to the bullpen...we'll see
