I am talking about my latest solo road trip from Neptune, New Jersey to Charlotte, North Carolina. It is not the first time I’ve done something like this.
My first solo road trip was in 2000 from Boston to Dallas. The trip took 27 hours and 8 minutes. I broke that trip down into three 9-hour shifts and only drove between Noon and 9 p.m.
Now, let’s fast forward to July 13th when I made the impromptu decision to drive 11 hours and 1,200 miles roundtrip to Charlotte via I-95 and I-85.
Crazy, huh?
I’m a natural-born driver and it wasn’t as bad as it sounds. I drove overnight so the only thing I had to deal with was road construction and 18-wheelers. I also have E-ZPass, so I didn’t have to stop for tolls and my blue bandit is good on gas.
Going South
I left Thursday night and made my first pit stop in Newark, Delaware. I visited two of the News Journal’s outstanding interns.

We chatted for about 30 minutes and I was off again. I planned to stop in the Washington, D.C. area to visit some of my friends but none of them answered their cell phones. Instead, I refueled in Elkridge, MD and was on my way again. I made it all the way to Lexington, NC on that tank of gas. I arrived in Charlotte around 11 a.m. on Friday.
While in Charlotte
I’ve learned why it is called “the Queen City” because there are a ton of beautiful and friendly women in Charlotte. I still say the Atlanta and Washington, D.C. areas still have the most beautiful and friendly black women, respectively, in the U.S. but I have to say Charlotte is No. 3 on my list. Sadly, I couldn’t convince any of the Queens of Charlotte to come back to New Jersey.

I’ll try harder next time I visit.
The Queen City is also a very clean city (or at least the downtown area is). Downtown Charlotte reminded me of Boston in that you can walk the circumference of downtown Charlotte in about 45 minutes.
The Charlotte Observer has its headquarters in downtown

and the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats

and the NFL’s Carolina Panthers are also in the downtown area.

The cost of living in Charlotte is ridiculously cheap. My friend rents a nice one-bedroom apartment for about $400 a month. Also, a decent house with some land will cost you about $90,000-$120,000. Also, you can park in downtown Charlotte at a decent rate.

Charlotte is definitely hot (I believed the temperature was in the 90s every day) and you must have an air conditioned-car and apartment/house to live comfortably there. I was born in Jamaica so the heat doesn’t bother me too much. Humidity is another story but Charlotte’s humidity didn’t bother me as much as the summer of 2000 in Dallas.
You’ll never run out of good places to eat in Charlotte (I strongly recommend a pizza joint called Fuel Pizza on North College Street) and there are plenty of bars/lounges where you can get reasonably priced drinks.

Charlotte is also a city on the rise. New condominiums are being built in downtown, the highways are getting a major makeover and it is also the home to numerous Fortune 500 company headquarters, like Bank of America. Charlotte is also the second-largest banking center in the United States.
Going North
I left Charlotte on Tuesday evening and made a pit spot in Durham, N.C. to visit my boy Stan “the Man.”

I also needed some batteries for my digital camera and a chance to check on my fantasy baseball teams. I also got a call from my former upstate New York friend Ms. “D” and she now lives in Raleigh.

She came through Durham to say hello to me before I got back on I-85 again that night. I made it all the way to Richmond, Va. before I had to get gas and then it was all systems go to New Jersey.

glad you had a great roadie. but maybe i need to go on the road with you so we can do some real damage out in the streets. the block would be hot!
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!! i'm so excited you went to charlotte!! i love my hometown!! fuel pizza is that jumpoff!! why'd you pick charlotte? you should've told me. i would've also told you to head to bojangles (chicken), but most importantly my fave family style fast food restaurant (i know that sounds crazy): SHOWMARS!!!!!!
it cracks me up how everyone talks abt how clean charlotte is. its also called the queen city b/c its named after queen charlotte, a black queen but your explanation will do! :)
how come when you come to my blog now you never comment on the post, but something random?
cost of living is gangsta there. my cousin just bought one of those downtown condos. they are quite expensive but gorgeous.
the humidity is the worst thing abt home to me. coupled w/constant temps in the 90s in july and august, it makes summer unbearable for me.
Actually Charlotte is becoming the new black mecca...And the women are nice there too...I think that's why I have been looking at getting a job in that area..LOL...Glad to see that you enjoyed the south...I'll keep you posted
Ohhhhhhhhh so not only did you go to Charlotte, you pitt stopped in DURHAM?????? mmmm mmm mmm *shaking my head*
Yeah, you could have at least got you a Bo berry biscuit from Bojangles since you were here like Meil said.
I question your statement about DC having nice folk. What part did you go to? You must have met the other tourist from out of town or something! LOL
I was in Charlotte once covering our men's basketball team's 1st ever NCAA game, and I saw very little of Charlotte itself but I loved it. The South in general is a lot better than the Northeast as far as cost of living and friendliness of people.
@skinny g....I love how you keep changing your blog persona...lol...however...yeah an East Coast Road Trip next summer might be hot.
Jameil1922...I've heard people brag about Charlotte for a minute and I've been told this could be the new Atlanta. So, I had to see what all the hype was about.
I'm a loyal reader of your blog...but when I don't have a real comment...I still leave something to let you know that I was there. It is all love.
@G. Cornelius Harris...the women looked scrumptious.
@ladynay...I didn't know that we were so tight. You know my e-mail address is listed on the blog...maybe you can convince me to make another trip...real soon.
I did eat at Bojangles...the food was good.
@chris....AMEN...AMEN....AMEN
i upload everything in photobucket.com then paste it in the html section of my post
@Clay.....GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL! I'm updating my entry right now...
I know we are all raving about Charlotte...but I have to put it out there, that women in Houston are also both beautiful and friendly (it's our way of life). Thank you. That is all.
loving that digital i see. i'm glad you enjoyed yourself. seems like the south may have what you're looking for. relocation might be a good idea. i'm just not sure that the southern ladies are ready for the sp charm. ;-)
LoL let me find out your switching from sports to travel and features.
Glad you enjoyed the trip.
What about Detroit?! We have beautiful women here too, fool! ;-)
@ashley...that may be true ashley...but what is the cost of living like there....what's a one bedroom apartment going to cost me?
how's the humdity? I did an internship in Dallas and I thought I was going to die from the humidity.
How active is the nabj chapter there?
@seedofeve...yeah i'm a digital camera master now...
@cnel...naw...I'm a sports man till the end.
@klc...detriot isn't warm enough and the cost of living is like Boston and where I live in N.J.
Sounds great... I am dying to go on a road trip myself.
First of all...
"I still say the Atlanta and Washington, D.C. areas still have the most beautiful and friendly black women, respectively, in the U.S."
You need to get with your friend Anthony, b/c he knows what's up.
#2: I'ma need you to get over the summer of 2000 down here. We have dry heat. DRY. And SOOOO many people that visit here have said high temperatures in dry heat is better than a few degrees cooler but humid, i.e. Houston. We're having the hottest summer in the history of the DFW area, I think it was 11 straight days of over 100 degree weather, or maybe it was 14.
But I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Charlotte, you seemed to be quite satisfied with the entertainment around you while you were there.
I remember we drove from BOston to Raleigh in 16 hours.......never again!!!!!!!I like NC..its a great place to raise a family. U look nice by the way
I'm so glad you had a good time! I'm a road warrior myself (and have found that taking US-13 from DE through VA has helped cut down on traffic-time tremendously, bypassing all of the cities). It's back-woods/country, but plenty of places to stop and a uniquely African American agricultural stronghold (the eastern shore portion of MD and VA). OK, but the only reason Atlanta's black women are more friendly than DC's would be because there aren't enough men to go around for them! They gotta keep their game tight! :-P
@NSearchOfMe...Road trips are fun...I've done two solo trips...but next time and every time after that...I need a co-pilot. I strongly suggest a co-pilot for your trip.
@journiemajor...what does the Anthony comment mean? e-mail me privately. Dallas is hot period...AND HUMID. That's why every car has to comes with A/C and A/C is a necessity in renting an apartment. Am I wrong on that?
Let me set the record straight, I like Texas women...but don't like Texas weather...so the the Big "D" doesn't make the cut this time around.
@Papis Princess...see what I said to NSearchOfMe.
@BZ...
"OK, but the only reason Atlanta's black women are more friendly than DC's would be because there aren't enough men to go around for them! They gotta keep their game tight!"
THAT IS A GREAT LINE....
chillin w/my soRHOrs! eeeeeeeee-yip!
and let me say mmmmmmmmmmmm bojangles!!!!
