Honestly, I was touched when I received two thank you letters from the High School Journalism Workshop I spoke at on July 4. I tried to take a picture of them with my digital camera but it didn't come out right and I don't have a scanner. (Hint...hint...for all those birthday shoppers...August 13th will be here sooner than you think).
So, I will retype both letters here...The first letter is from Dr. Eleanor M. Novek, the program's director.
Dear spchrist,
Please accept my deep thanks for your efforts on behalf of the students of the 2006 Hugh N. Boyd Minorities Journalism Workshop.
Your participation helped make this program a resounding success. The students were able to take the information they learned during the workshop's field trips, panels, and presentations and incorporate it into articles and op-ed pieces in their workshop newspaper, "the Mosaic."
Enclosed is a copy of the workshop publication, so you can see how their stories came out! You're also receiving some "fan mail" from the students themselves.
Thank you again for your vital assistance.
Sincerely,
Dr. Eleanor M. Novek
MJW Director
And speaking of the fan mail....
Dear spchrist,
I would like to sincerely thank you for taking the time to come and speak to us about sports journalism. Your presentation was my favorite at the workshop. Every morning when I open the papers, I flip over to the sports section first. I think that sports journalism is very exciting and I would love to get involved in it some day.
I admire your extensive knowledge of so many sports and athletes. The crash course you gave us on baseball really helped me enjoy the Trenton Thunder game. I had never appreciated baseball until I went to the game and actually watched it from the beginning to end. Now, I realize that I never enjoyed baseball because I did not understand it. I owe it to you for opening my eyes to a new and exciting sport that I am now very interested in. As a basketball player and soccer fan, I will always look out for new sports to follow.
Your presentation also greatly helped me as sports editor of the Mosaic. I hope that when you receive a copy of the paper, you will not be disappointed with the sports page. With your extensive knowledge, I have no doubt that you will be covering the NBA soon! Again, I am truly grateful to know such an awesome sports journalist and basketball fan.
I would love to contact you in the futur to further develop my journalistic skills. You can contact me at my cell phone or you may reach me through e-mail. I look forward to speaking to you again!
Sincerely,
Reem Nasr
