My Weekend (In black & white...part 2)

WHITE

So, it was Friday night and I just got paid! I'm driving home from work at 11:45 p.m. and I see sky lights coming from the distance. As far as I knew, there wasn't sh#t going on in the hood but the sky lights indicated that someone was having a party. Where the hell was my invitation? I got to my house and I was exhausted. I just completed a demanding week of work and my recent feature story was running in Saturday's paper. I wanted to celebrate. After a quick Internet investigation, I found out that Bar Anticipation was having a "Coors Light Maxim Model Search Party."

Word? I now had something to do. I get in my ride and drive over to the spot. I walk up to the front door and some white guy, who was leaving, said what's up to me in the non-verbal way (the slight head nod). I was already feeling at home. I pay the $7 cover (it was free before 9 p.m.) and immediately find myself surrounded in a spot full of drunk white people. The bar is crowded, the flat screen televisions on the wall are on ESPN and everyone had a drink in their hands. My type of party. I get there just in time for the Coors Light Maxim Model Search competition on the stage. Four white girls (all marginally cute) are parading themselves on stage while a bunch of drunk white guys hoot and holler on which one they think is the finest. For your information, Girl #4 won and then I left.

BLACK

My high school friend recently moved to Philadelphia. Around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night, I made the impromptu decision to take a road trip. I put in the mapquest address and got my planned route (I swear Mapquest always takes you on a toll road..even if a shorter route on a free stretch of highway exits). 73 miles to my destination. I popped the old school CD in the my CD player and hit the road.

I reached my destination safely, however, my return trip home on Sunday morning was another story.

I got lost in Philadelphia and only a small I-95 sign saved me. I got on I-95 North and took the long scenic and free way home. I-95 North into New Jersey and then it changes over to I-295 South to I-195 East...etc. Along the way, I saw five separate New Jersey State Troopers hiding on the highway. I wasn't speeding (anyone that knows me well...knows I never speed). The speed limit was 65 m.p.h. I was doing 60 m.p.h. My heart rate still went up exponentially because of this disorder called driving while black...a.k.a. DWB. The New Jersey State Police admitted to racial profiling in 1999 and agreed to monitoring by the U.S. Department of Justice for five years. I'm sure New Jersey's finest have cleaned up their act since then but you never know. Hence, my cause for concern. I've only been pulled over a handful of times in my nine years of driving (in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey) and I've only received one speeding ticket in my life (thanks to the @#$%^& Connecticut State Police) and that was almost six years ago. Parking tickets are another story.

I got pulled over once in December of '04 for speeding and not having a seatbelt on, but the State Trooper was a brother, so he let me off with a warning. As wild as I drive, I'm not surprised I haven't had more trouble.

I f*cking hate the state of CT, its police, all its sh*tty-a$$ drivers and laughable speed limits. CT is a f*cking joke. If it were removed from the face of the earth, the US would be a much better place! (Not to mention, my commute home would be hella shorter.)

At any rate: you are good. I am not one to surround myself with drunk white folks. They irritate the hell out of me. I always feel like I'm in one of those movies where some poor unsuspecting child is trying to navigate her way through a sea of oblivious drug-induced club-goers.

I would gladly accept CT's resignation from "these" United States.

Ditto all of the comments on CT. I would also like to comment that Philadelphia has the smallest street signs in America, impossible to see while driving at night, you have to go by landmarks..."turn right at city hall and then take a left at the huge statute of Ben Franklin..." LOL

You're not gonna like this. But, wherever you go there you are. That being said, the same is true when you are trying to traverse the limited club scene in New Jersey. But here are a few, Elements Lounge...good food, not a dance club, in Seabright. Jenkinson's in Pt. Pleasant(gross, crowded, white). Otherwise, stay home, watch a movie-or-go to New York or Philly.
