The precedent was not broken. A full-time designated hitter has never won the MVP award and Boston Rex Sox DH David Ortiz came very close to the hardware. New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez won the award for the second time in three seasons in a vote that rewarded an all-around player over a designated hitter. In his second season as the Yankees third baseman, Rodriguez received 16 first-place votes, 11 seconds and one third for 331 points from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Ortiz, the DH for the Red Sox got 11 firsts and 17 seconds for 307 points.

BOOOO! I dont care about the stats, Papi was ROBBED!...Oh well at least Pujols won for the National League.
If there was a moment to give the first full-time DH the MVP award...this was the year. If A-Rod wasn't on the Yankees this season, New York still makes the playoffs...if David Ortiz wasn't on the Red Sox this season, Boston doesn't make the playoffs
